Sound & Lighting Insurance
PA Systems, Speakers & Stage Lighting Cover
Sound and lighting rigs are the backbone of live events — and among the most expensive equipment any entertainer or event company owns. From PA systems and speakers to intelligent lighting rigs and stage production gear, specialist cover is essential for any working professional.
What's Covered
- ✓PA systems, mixers, and amplifiers
- ✓Stage lighting and intelligent fixtures
- ✓Cables, stands, and flight cases
- ✓Outdoor event and festival cover
- ✓Vehicle transit and hire transport cover
Common Risks for Sounds
- ⚠Transport and rigging damage to speakers
- ⚠Theft from venues or event sites
- ⚠Electrical faults and power surge damage
- ⚠Weather damage at outdoor events
- ⚠Damage during loading and unloading
Real Claim Example
A Hamilton sound company's PA system was damaged when a hired van was involved in an accident. Transit cover under their equipment policy replaced the damaged speaker cabinets.
Sound and Lighting — A High-Value, High-Risk Category
Professional sound and lighting equipment represents some of the highest per-item values in the entertainment industry. A pair of d&b Audiotechnik V-Series line array cabinets might cost $25,000. A full intelligent lighting rig with moving heads, dimmer racks, and control systems can run to $80,000 or more. These systems are transported to events in vans and trucks, flown from rigging points, and operated in environments ranging from indoor theatres to exposed outdoor festival sites. The risk exposure across transit, rigging, electrical supply, and weather is enormous — and requires specialist insurance designed for the live events sector.
Transit and Vehicle Cover
The majority of claims for PA and lighting equipment involve transit. Equipment gets damaged when items shift in vehicles, flight cases are crushed under other cargo, or hired transport is involved in a road accident. Most specialist equipment policies include transit cover, but check the specifics: are third-party hired vehicles covered? Does the policy require equipment to be in flight cases? Are there value restrictions per vehicle load? Transit claims are often the difference between a working production company and a catastrophic financial loss.
Tip: Always load heavy speaker cabinets on the vehicle floor and secure them with tie-down straps. Document your loading configuration with photos — this supports a transit damage claim by showing proper care was taken.
Rigging and Height-Work Risks
Flying speakers and lighting fixtures from truss and rigging points introduces risks that ground-based equipment doesn't face. A rigging failure at height can cause equipment damage, venue damage, and potentially serious personal injury. While public liability insurance covers the injury aspect, specialist equipment insurance covers the cost of the damaged gear — and you want to ensure the policy covers rigging activities explicitly. Dropped equipment from height can result in total loss of expensive fixtures and significant collateral damage to other equipment below.
- →Confirm policy covers equipment while rigged at height
- →Check whether rigging failures are explicitly included or excluded
- →Ensure public liability accompanies equipment cover for rigging work
- →Document all rigging calculations and weight certifications
Outdoor Events and Weather Risk
Outdoor events introduce weather risks that simply don't apply indoors: rain, wind, and temperature extremes can all damage sound and lighting equipment. Speaker cabinets designed for indoor use are not weatherproof. Intelligent lighting fixtures have limited IP ratings. Digital mixing desks have essentially no water resistance. A sudden change in weather conditions at an outdoor event can result in the rapid removal and potentially damaging exposure of expensive equipment. Check that your policy explicitly covers weather-related damage at outdoor events.
Power and Electrical Protection
Live events run on temporary power supplies that are often far less stable than the mains power in a fixed installation. Generator sets produce voltage spikes. Extension leads and distribution units are under-specified for the loads placed on them. Power interruption during a performance can cause digital equipment to fail or corrupt internal firmware. Power surge damage is a real and relatively common claim for sound and lighting equipment used in live events. Ensure your policy includes electrical damage coverage and check whether generator power is treated differently to mains supply.
