Real Claim Example
An Auckland DJ had their controller and laptop stolen from their car after a corporate event. Their equipment policy replaced both items, getting them back behind the decks within days.
The DJ Equipment Risk Profile
DJ equipment combines high value with high mobility — a combination that makes it one of the most theft-prone categories of music gear. A typical professional DJ rig might include two CDJ-3000 players, a DJM-900NXS2 mixer, a laptop, audio interface, headphones, and a flight case — a setup worth $10,000–$20,000 or more. That equipment moves regularly between the DJ's home, gig venues, and storage, often being loaded into a vehicle late at night after an event. Every one of those transitions is a potential theft or damage event.
Liquid Damage — A Constant Hazard
Liquor venues and DJ booths are a dangerous combination. Spilled drinks on controllers and mixers can cause immediate electronic failure or corrosion damage that manifests weeks later. Many standard equipment insurance policies exclude liquid damage caused by alcohol, or only cover it if the spill happened 'accidentally' rather than through normal venue conditions. When comparing DJ equipment insurance policies, check specifically how liquid damage is handled — and whether the policy covers damage at the performance venue, not just at home.
Tip: Use protective covers on gear during venue setup and ask venues about their policy for drinks near DJ equipment. Some venues have strict no-drinks policies in the booth that provide additional protection.
Laptop and Software Cover
The DJ laptop is often the most vulnerable and most critical piece of equipment in the rig — and one of the most frequently stolen items. Most DJ equipment insurance policies cover laptops up to a sub-limit, which may be significantly less than your laptop's replacement value. Check the sub-limit applies to your specific laptop's current market value, and if not, consider whether a separate laptop insurance policy is needed. Note that software licences, music libraries, and digital files are almost never covered by standard equipment insurance — these require a separate media and data loss policy.
- →Confirm laptop sub-limit covers replacement value
- →Ask about coverage for audio interfaces and external drives
- →Software and digital music libraries are typically excluded from equipment policies
- →Consider cloud backup for irreplaceable digital assets
Festival and Outdoor Event Cover
DJing at outdoor festivals creates additional risks beyond the standard venue environment — weather exposure, muddy conditions, generators with unstable power, and large crowds create a higher-risk operating environment. Check that your equipment policy explicitly covers outdoor events and festivals, including weather-related damage such as rain ingress. Some policies restrict cover to 'indoor venues' only, which would leave you without cover at some of the biggest gig opportunities available.
Getting Emergency Hire Right
If your CDJs or controller are stolen or damaged before a booked gig, emergency hire cover allows you to hire replacement equipment so you can still perform. This is one of the most practically valuable parts of a DJ equipment policy — but check the limit carefully. Emergency hire for professional-grade CDJs can cost $300–$800 per day, and a comprehensive policy should include at least $1,000–$2,000 of emergency hire cover. Also check the geographic scope — hire equipment availability outside major cities can be limited, and your policy should account for that.
