Everything musicians, teachers, and event organisers ask about music insurance — answered in plain language.

Do I really need specialist music insurance?

If you use your instruments or equipment professionally — to perform, teach, or record — then yes. Standard home contents insurance typically excludes professional use, and the gap in cover can be significant. Specialist music insurance is designed for the way musicians actually use their gear.

How much does music insurance cost?

Costs vary depending on the value of equipment being insured, the liability limits required, and your performance activities. As a rough guide, basic combined equipment and liability cover for a working musician might range from $300 to $800 per year. Festival and event insurance is priced separately based on revenue at risk.

Can I get cover the same day?

In many cases, yes. Specialist music insurance can often be arranged and confirmed quickly — sometimes the same day for straightforward equipment and liability policies. For event-specific covers (cancellation, non-appearance), more lead time is required.

Does music insurance cover my home studio?

Yes. Studio equipment insurance can cover gear at your home studio against theft, accidental damage, and fire or flood. If you have clients visiting your home studio, public liability insurance is also important — home contents policies typically exclude commercial activities.

What's the difference between public liability and professional indemnity?

Public liability covers claims for physical injury or property damage from third parties. Professional indemnity covers claims arising from your professional advice or services — for example, a student disputing your teaching methods. Music teachers typically need both; performers primarily need public liability.

Am I covered when I travel internationally for music?

Most specialist instrument insurance policies include worldwide cover. For international tours, check that your policy specifically covers the countries you're visiting and that the liability limits meet local venue requirements. Standard travel insurance does not adequately cover professional equipment.

💡 Tip: Always carry a copy of your insurance certificate or certificate of currency when performing — venues may ask to see proof of cover before confirming access.
